Inspired by the Olympics? Here’s How Kids Can Start Figure Skating

Every time the Olympic Winter Games appear on television, thousands of kids suddenly want to try figure skating. They watch the incredible jumps, beautiful spins, and dramatic music and think:

“I want to do that!”

The good news is that every Olympic skater started exactly the same way, by stepping onto the ice for the first time and learning the basics.

If your child has been inspired by Olympic skating, here is how the journey typically begins.

Step 1: Start with Basic Skating Skills

Before learning jumps or spins, every skater must develop strong skating fundamentals.

These include:

  • Balance on the ice

  • Forward and backward skating

  • Basic edges

  • Simple turns and stops

These skills are usually taught through a Learn-to-Skate group program, where children begin building confidence on the ice.

Once skaters become comfortable moving around the rink, they can begin learning the fun elements everyone sees on TV.

Step 2: Learning the First Spins and Jumps

After the basics, skaters begin learning their first elements.

Typical early skills include:

Beginning Spins

  • Two-foot spin

  • One-foot upright spin

First Jumps

  • Waltz jump

  • Half flip

  • Half lutz

These early jumps teach coordination, timing, and take-off technique.

While they may look small, these jumps are actually the foundation of every jump seen in Olympic skating.

Step 3: Adding Private Lessons

As skaters progress, many families add private coaching lessons.

Private lessons allow a coach to:

  • Correct technique early

  • Build strong skating edges

  • Develop jumps and spins faster

  • Create a personalized training plan

Most competitive skaters combine group classes with private lessons, which is the best way to progress efficiently.

Step 4: Building Confidence and Skills

One of the biggest benefits of figure skating is how it develops children beyond athletics.

Skaters gain:

  • Confidence

  • Discipline

  • resilience

  • artistic expression

  • goal-setting skills

Many young skaters participate in their first ice show or beginner competition, which is often an exciting milestone for both skaters and parents.

From First Lesson to Olympic Dreams

While only a few skaters reach the Olympics, every Olympic champion started with the same first step, learning to glide across the ice.

Figure skating is unique because it combines:

  • athletic ability

  • musical expression

  • creativity

  • dedication

And the journey begins much sooner than many parents realize.

Many Olympic skaters first stepped on the ice between ages 4 and 8, though older beginners can still enjoy tremendous progress and success.

Thinking About Trying Figure Skating?

If your child has been inspired by the Olympics, the best way to start is simply to try a lesson and see how they enjoy the ice.

A first lesson usually includes:

  • Basic skating instruction

  • Introduction to edges and balance

  • Guidance on skates and equipment

  • A chance to experience the fun of skating

For many children, that first glide across the ice becomes the beginning of a lifelong passion.
